Field Day at Strong

Students, staff, and parents had a great time at our annual field day celebration.  Bounce houses, dance parties, popcorn, sack races, and cotton candy were all part of the fun.  Assistant Principal Mr. Flanagan joined in the fun by getting dunked in the dunk tank!

A New Addition to the Strong Community

At this month's town meeting, we were excited to present  two humanoid robots to the Strong community!  The Nao robots have many exciting capabilities, and will offer our students the opportunity to work on computer coding.  We also announced a naming contest for them.  Parents, teachers, and of course, students are invited to submit their ideas.

Calendar Updates

Please mark your calendars with these important updates:

  • There will be an early dismissal (12:50) on Friday, April 15th.
  • Strong Magnet School will be closed from Saturday, April 16th - Sunday, April 24th for Spring Break.
  • Monday, April 25th, schools re-open.
  • There will be an early dismissal (12:50) on Wednesday, April 27th for parent conferences.  Conferences are occurring during multiple days the week of April 25th - April 29th.  Please check your child's backpack for notices about scheduling your conference.

Strong Named a National Magnet School of Distinction

We are thrilled and honored to receive a National Magnet School of Distinction Award in recognition of all the hard work and dedication our entire school community has shown in transforming our building into an engaging and stimulating 21st century communications magnet school. While we are proud of this accomplishment, we recognize that this is the beginning of our continued journey towards excellence.  Great job all!

Author Allison Stoutland Visits Strong

Allison Stoutland, the author of children's books such as "Reach for the Sky," "Take a Deep Breath," "Put Your Best Foot Forward," and "What Can I Do Today" visited Strong to discuss her writing with students.  She met with each grade level to describe her journey as an author, and how she finds inspiration to write in every day things.  She finished each assembly by reading one of her books.  Thank you for visiting Mrs. Stoutland!

The Superintendent in the Hat

Strong 21st Century Communications Magnet School celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2nd.  Volunteers from the United Way of Greater New Haven, Yale-New Haven Hospital, First Niagara Bank, and New Haven Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries came to read to each of our classes.  Special thanks to Yale-New Haven Hospital for generously donating Dr. Seuss books for our classroom libraries.

World Read Aloud Day

Imagine a world where everyone can read…

 

On February 24th, students, teachers, and staff members will be celebrating World Read Aloud Day by reading aloud in our classrooms and taking action on behalf of the 793 million people who cannot read.  By sharing stories, we build a literacy community and grow strong as readers.  On this day, continue the celebration at home by reading aloud with your loved ones.

First Graders Standing Tall

At our January Town Meeting, first graders from Mrs. Cappiello's class presented work from their unit on animal communication.  They created a game show that involved matching the animal with their appropriate communication technique.  Students from the crowd got to participate in the game and try to make a match.  There was lots of laughing, cheering, and learning from the crowd.  Great job first graders!

Isn't It Kind Of Cold For Shorts?!?!

Miss Ovalles's Kindergarteners are studying how weather forecasts help us to make good decisions about what to do, what to wear, and where to go.  To show their learning, they performed a fashion show wearing clothing appropriate for the different seasons of the year.  They put on this show for the whole school at our January Town Meeting.

Chinese Performance

At our January Town Meeting, a group of Mr. Chen's fourth graders performed "If You're Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands" in Chinese for the entire school community.  Every one enjoyed it as we got to clap along with the words.  Great job fourth graders!

Communicating Through Song and Dance

Our third graders are working on a unit that involves communicating through song and dance.  They have studied various musicians, analyzed song lyrics, and studied dancers and different forms of dance.  They created newsletters that show their findings.  Great job third graders!

Hard at Work in Our Discovery Lab

Our fourth graders have been hard at work building alarm circuits while in our Discovery Lab.  Mr. Ward, our STEM teacher, has collaborated with classroom teachers to show Strong students how electrical circuits work.  Here, some of our students are gaining hands-on experience with electrical circuits by building an alarm with a functioning switch.

Communicating Emotions in Chinese

Our students communicated a variety of emotions using Chinese characters.  They drew pictures of their faces with the emotion, and then wrote down the appropriate Chinese character next to it.  Great job!

Firefighters Visit Strong Magnet School
